What is chemical genetics?
Chemical genetics the study of how small molecules affect a biological process (1). Chemical genetic screens employ hundreds of small molecules to induce a phenotype of interest (1). These screens are particularly useful in identifying new medications or chemical therapies to force a different phenotype in diseased people (2).

Results
Since there are already numerous cancer drugs, the best aim of this screen would be to find a chemical that can cause increased activity in ALDH2 mutants. Therefore, mutant ALDH2 mice could be exposed to a diverse chemical library since there is no known chemicals that increase ALDH2 activity. I will then measure blood alcohol levels of the mice to determine which chemical decreases the affect of ALDH2 mutations. This screen aims to increase the metabolic rate of alcohol in ALDH2 mutants.

Discussion
There is no current known association chemical approach to increase the conversion of acetaldehyde to acetate. However, this chemical genetic screen may elucidate a chemical that increases the metabolism of alcohol.
